A Surprise Bonus Offer From Citi Prestige

a credit card on a brown surface

Many of the benefits of the Citi Prestige cards have become valueless in the world of COVID-19.  What good are bonus points at airlines, restaurants, hotels and cruise lines when you’re not spending in any of those categories?

The same goes for a fourth-night free hotel benefit, $250 travel credit, Priority Pass Membership and Global Entry reimbursement.

Citi hasn’t made as many concessions except for allowing Prestige cardholders to use their $250 travel credit for supermarket and restaurant spending.

That was, until now. Citi Prestige cardholders are getting additional bonus categories until the end of 2020.

You already earn 5 points per $1 spent on air travel and restaurant purchases, including when you make these purchases online. Now, in addition, you can earn a total of 5 points per $1 spent through December 31, 2020 – up to 7,500 points on all other online purchases and cable & popular streaming services

Citi has a strange way of setting up bonuses. The fine print says that bonus points awarded with this offer are subject to a maximum of 7,500 additional points. Since you’ll regularly earn 1 point per dollar, to get an additional 7,500 points you’ll need to spend $1,875.

With the holidays quickly approaching, most of us are doing a bit of online spending. If you have a Citi Prestige, this could be a valuable offer. As a reminder, Discover also offers 5% back in purchases at Amazon.com, Walmart.com and Target.com until the end of 2020.

The offer also pays bonus points for cable and streaming services. I’m not going to move my cable bill from the Ink Cash card.
