How To Save 10% On Citi ThankYou Transactions

by joeheg

ThankYou Rewards is Citi’s proprietary loyalty program. By having a credit card that earns ThankYou points, you can then redeem those points in several ways depending on which Citi card(s) you have. But did you know there’s a way to save 10% on all of your ThankYou point transactions up to a savings of 10,000 points per year?

No matter which Citi card you have, you will get 10% back when you redeem ThankYou points if you have a Citi Rewards+ card. The best thing about this is that the Citi Rewards+ card has no annual fee.

For example, I transferred 1,000 ThankYou points to Choice Rewards to keep my account active. Shortly thereafter I received an email saying I received 100 points back from my Citi Rewards+ card.

Just because you have a Citi Rewards+ card doesn’t mean you’ll automatically get 10% back with all of your Citi cards. The steps you have to take depend on the combination of Citi cards that you have. In my case, I have a Citi Preferred, Citi Custom Cash and Citi Rewards+ card.

It took some work but eventually, I was able to combine all three cards into one ThankYou account. This was great because I now can transfer the points I earn with all of my Citi ThankYou cards to any of Citi’s travel partners. It also means when I transfer points out of my ThankYou account, it automatically triggers the 10% rebate.

You’ll only have access to the full set of partners if you have a Citi Premier or Citi Prestige card. If you don’t have one of these cards, you’ll have other ways to redeem your points.

Instead of transferring points, I booked flights to Iceland with our ThankYou points through the Citi travel portal. Since the tickets cost more than 100,000 points, I received a rebate of 10,000 points (the yearly max)

You can also redeem ThankYou points for purchases on Amazon.com, to purchase gift cards or to pay with points through many websites with PayPal. Any of these redemptions will earn 10% back.

To get the rebate, your accounts need to be linked. If they’re not, you can either link the accounts before redeeming points or transfer the points to the ThankYou account linked to your Rewards+ card. However, transferring points also comes with its own risks as transferred points expire in 90 days.

The Citi Double Cash card has its own set of rules for transferring points and here’s an explanation of that process.

If you’re involved in earning Citi ThankYou points, it makes sense to look into the Citi Rewards+ card. With it you can earn an effortless 10,000 points every year with no-annual-fee.
