Discover’s latest 5% Cashback Bonus categories are now live, and Q3 2026 brings one of the most interesting combinations we’ve seen in years: Gas Stations, Transportation and Drug Stores. While gas stations and drug stores have both appeared before, this marks the first time Discover has offered Transportation as a 5% bonus category.
What Counts (and What Doesn’t)
Gas Station purchases include purchases made at merchants classified as places that sell automotive gasoline, whether at the pump or inside the station. Public EV charging stations also qualify. However, gas stations affiliated with supermarkets, supercenters and wholesale clubs may not earn the bonus.
Transportation is the most interesting category this quarter. Discover’s definition includes purchases made directly with:
- Airlines
- Local commuter transportation, including buses, rail and ferries
- Long-distance passenger rail and bus services
However, there are several notable exclusions. Purchases made through online travel agencies or other third-party booking sites may not qualify. Car rentals, cruise lines, taxis, rideshare services (including Uber, Lyft, shared bikes and scooters), parking garages and tolls are also excluded. Drug Store purchases include stand-alone drug stores, pharmacies and online pharmacies. Pharmacies located inside grocery stores, warehouse clubs or other retailers may not qualify.
A First For Discover
The headline this quarter isn’t gas stations or drug stores—it’s transportation.
While several credit cards offer bonus rewards on travel, Discover has never before included a category this broad in its rotating 5% calendar. The inclusion of airfare is especially noteworthy, although you’ll need to book directly with the airline instead of using an online travel agency to ensure your purchase qualifies.
Maximizing This Quarter
- Activate your bonus first. As always, you’ll only earn 5% beginning on the date you activate.
- Book directly with airlines. Third-party booking sites may not qualify for the transportation category.
- Use another card for rideshares and parking. Those purchases aren’t included, even though they’re transportation expenses.
- Keep an eye on the $1,500 spending cap. Between airfare, gas and everyday drugstore purchases, many cardholders could reach the maximum bonus before September 30.
Final Thought
Discover occasionally surprises us with an unexpected rotating category, and Transportation is one of the most valuable additions we’ve seen. Combined with gas stations and drug stores, Q3 2026 offers plenty of opportunities to earn bonus cash back on everyday purchases as well as summer travel.
