Sexism is apparently alive and well at Japan’s Hilton Osaka, where their new (it opened in March) cafe/bar, called My Place, currently has a discount offer running for women who wear high heels – and the higher the heels, the more of a discount they’ll receive.
Wait, what the…?!?!?! Yeah, I know. Read more for the details…
As per Japan Today, “High Heels Ladies’ Night Discount” is offered on Thursday nights between 6pm and 11:30pm. The heels must be at least 5 centimeters (about 2 inches) to be considered “high,” and that will give the shoe wearer 10% off any non-course meal menu option, which includes MyPlace’s selection of tapas, ramen noodles ,salads, craft beers, gins, organic wines and cocktails. Going from there, each 2 centimeters of heel height gives the wearer more of a discount:
- 5 cm or more and less than 7 cm → 10% discount
- 7 cm or more and less than 9 cm → 15% discount
- 9 cm or more and less than 11 cm → 20% discount
- 11 cm or more and less than 13 cm → 25% discount
- 13 cm or more and less than 15 cm → 30% discount
- 15 cm (about 5.9″) or more → 40% discount
In doing some further research, it appears the discount is in conjunction with a new Japanese movie called “High Heels – Fairy Tale Where Commitment Was Born,” as My Place apparently gave away 5 pairs of tickets to the movie a few days ago. By the way, the description of the movie, when translated from Japanese, is pretty hysterical:
When the endless desire of human destroyed the world, people chose to become themselves android themselves to abandon desire and save the world. However, an error occurs in some of the androids and “desire” once again germinates. At that time, a customer came under the shoe craftsman Kai who wanted to make shoes perfect for himself …. Riko Kikuchi plays a genderless shoe craftworker and a topical work where CHANEL cooperated specially for a part of costumes. Opening is a poetic dark fantasy which started with animation of Shinku Hanzaki who deals with Mr. Children’s MV etc. and expresses the story of the androids whose desire was born in live action!
So anyway, yeah, while the American culture is trying to embrace equality, minimize mysogyny and empower women and girls, a hotel bar in Osaka appears to be exploiting the continuing Japanese culture of sexism.
Well, either that or someone at My Place has a foot fetish ;-).
BUT, perhaps there’s hope – if you look way down towards the bottom of the page, the small print on the Hilton Osaka’s website, besides having the typical “offer subject to change without warning,” “tax and tip will be added separately,” “Discount can only be used for your own meal,” etc., it DOES say that men can also use the high heel discount. So at least they have that going for them…;-)
