If you’re above a certain age, you may remember going clubbing – it was just a few years ago, right? – where you danced to the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson or maybe Christina Aguilera. You don’t do that anymore, of course…times change, lives change, you’ve changed and today’s music certainly isn’t nearly as good as what YOU danced to. But guess what? Put on your dancing shoes because a new club has opened and it’s specifically geared to the 35-and-over crowd!
RetroClubNYC opened in the Chelsea section of New York City this past summer and so far it’s been a huge hit! Open on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, the retro-designed club space at 161 West 23rd Street offers over 2400 square feet of space, complete with a front lounge area, 40-foot bar, disco dance floor, DJ booth and stage. And best of all, its music is dedicated to dance music from the 70s, 80s and 90s through today!
The brains behind the concept is owner Jeff Wittels, who conceived the club not only out of his love for retro dance music, but because he saw a gap in club offerings for more mature adults. “Since the days of the 70s, 80s and 90s, all that’s left in the city are 20- to 25-year old hip-hop clubs, which not many people my age are interested in going to.” Wittels says. “Where are the places where everyone 30-plus is going?” To solve that problem, he opened such a place.
Besides “older” dance music (including Thursday retro vinyl night), the bar also offers happy hour, throwback retro cocktails on a rotating basis, plus small plate appetizer specials.
So if you’re in New York City and are looking for a place to boogie that has a vibe reminiscent of Studio 54 (without some of the things that got people in trouble back then), look no further than RetroClubNYC! We bet you’ll have a blast!
