Shaun White, Lindsey Vonn and The U.S. Men’s Curling Team Earned You Extra Miles

The Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea is over but you can still celebrate our U.S. Olympic medal winners and get some bonus credit card points while you’re at it. I think the most creative idea for a credit card bonus the last several years has come from U.S. Bank.

The U.S. Bank FlexPerks Travel Rewards card is a decent card that earns fixed value points that are worth 1.5 cents each. The card usually has a sign-up bonus of 20,000 points but during the last couple of Summer and Winter Olympics, they’ve been running a unique promotion.

If you sign up for the FlexPerks card during the Olympics (and even a few days thereafter), U.S Bank will increase your sign up bonus for each medal the U.S. wins. While this promotion tends to be more lucrative during the Summer Olympics, it pays off during the Winter Games, as well. They’ve also increased the base signup bonus to 25,000 Flex Points and added the following:

Unfortunately, you don’t get points for each medal for members of the U.S. Women’s Ice Hockey team but their Gold Medal win earned you 500 extra points.

The one advantage of this offer is you get the increased offer as long as you have sign up before March 10th. So some people wait to see how the U.S. Olympic Team does before signing up for the card. U.S. Bank has already done the math for you:

As of this writing, you have 10 days to sign up and earn 32,100 FlexPoints if you spend $2,000 within the first four months of account opening. Those points are worth $481 in travel. A link for this offer is at the U.S. Bank website.

If you’re interested in this card, there’s a great write up about it on the Doctor of Credit website. I give U.S. Bank credit for being inventive with their promotions. Unfortunately, they can be a bit difficult to deal with when signing up for new credit cards. Hopefully they’re nicer than Delta was to the U.S. Curling Team when they asked for upgraded flights on their way home from winning a gold medal.
