Driving in the greater Orlando area is about to get a whole lot “E-Zier” for 35 million E-ZPass users. The Central Florida Expressway Authority and the E-ZPass Group have FINALLY come to an agreement and effective September 1, 2018, motorists who have an E-ZPass transponder will be able to use it for nearly all toll roads in Central Florida!
“Orlando is the most visited destination in the United States, so whether traveling here for business or pleasure, we want our visitors to have the same travel experience that local residents enjoy year-round,” said Laura Kelley, Executive Director of CFX. “The launch of our partnership with E-ZPass makes driving in Orlando a safe, convenient choice for drivers.”
The Central Florida Expressway Authority group of toll roads includes all or parts of State Roads 408, 414, 417, 429, 451 and 528 (the 417 [The Greeneway] and 528 [The Beachline, previously The Beeline] are the two road most often used between Orlando International Airport and Walt Disney World). E-ZPasses will not work on roads operated by Florida’s Turnpike Enterprises (part of the Florida Department of Transportation [FDOT]), such as Florida’s Turnpike (S.R. 91).
“Our customers wanted portability to the Sunshine State, and now they have it in Metro Orlando, the number one tourist destination in the U.S.,” said E-ZPass Group Executive Director PJ Wilkins. “This is another example of our commitment to toll interoperability.”
If you live in one of the areas where you own an E-ZPass or a transponder that has operating and reciprocity agreements with E-ZPass, you can now use your transponder on the CFXway roads if you drive to Florida. If you prefer to rent your car, you can also bring your transponder with you and not have to pay for the
rental car company’s transponder or method they use to collect tolls.
The 500,000+ E-Pass toll transponders in circulation in Metro Orlando and throughout Florida will not function at existing E-ZPass facilities (BOO! said Sharon, the Orlando resident). However, CFX E-Pass customers will have the opportunity to request a special tag that will work at all E-ZPass toll plazas in the 16 state region that E-ZPass covers.
