It you’re like me, there are few things you’d rather do less than stand in a line with a crowd of people just to fight your way through a crowded store so you can get a TV for half price. Not my idea of fun, and not just because we hardly ever watch TV at home anyway. You get the idea. I’m not a target for the Black Friday sales.
When the consumer created shopping day of Cyber Monday developed, I didn’t get it because when I went back to work on Monday I had work to do and didn’t have time to be use my computer at work to go shopping online. Apparently, many other people do get it and we now have a week full of sales from Pre-Black Friday to the newly coined phrase ‘Cyber Week”, but as a Dr. Who fan I’m not sure I like that one as it reminds me too much of these guys.
The first place many online shoppers will go this weekend is Amazon.com. I mean you can buy almost anything you want there and have it shipped almost immediately. While Amazon used to offer discounts or bonuses on purchases, these offers tended to dry up once Amazon knew they were the big player in town and didn’t have to discount anymore.
Well times are changing and it’s pretty easy to get some sort of discount or cash back on Amazon.com purchases.
Quarterly offers
If you have a Discover card, just activate your quarterly bonus categories and you’ll earn 5% cash back on all Amazon.com purchases, up to $1,500. This is a really easy way to save if you have a Discover card. We’ve switched our Amazon purchases to the Discover since October but will be switching because of the next offer.
Targeted offers
Getting this email was one of the best Christmas presents ever. I’m going to receive $30 statement credit once I make three $30 Amazon.com purchases before the end of the year. That’s a 33% discount if I plan things perfectly. I’ll end up making about 28% because I’m not going to buy exactly $30 but I’ll get close. Check your email or regular mail for this offer to see if you’ve been targeted. I’ll be taking advantage of this one.
Hit or Miss offers
These offers come and go. You just need to be on the lookout for them and give it a shot. Most importantly, follow the directions in the post you are reading, exactly! The order you do things could make a huge difference in the price.
There are some offers like:
- Get 20% off on Amazon when you use at least one Membership Rewards points from American Express.
- Amazon is offering $15 off $60 when you use at least one Chase Ultimate Rewards point
Using offers like these was how I managed to get a pair of $299 Bose noise cancelling headphones from Amazon.com for $73 on Prime Day.
There are many other ways to save on Amazon.com:
- If you’re flying on JetBlue, in flight Amazon.com purchases using the Fly-Fi service earn three True Blue points per dollar spent.
- You could always buy Amazon.com gift card at places that pay a good return for specific stores like grocery stores or office supply stores. I know of this but it involves an extra step and you lose some of the purchase protections when paying with a gift card. I’d rather get the insurance.
- Use the Amazon Prime Visa card. I’m not saying it’s for everyone but for some people it makes sense to have and use it.
Happy shopping!
