Here we go again.
For the third time in as many months, Chick-fil-A is trying to get space in an airport and the local government is doing whatever it can, rightly or wrongly, to fight it.
In March, the San Antonio City Council approved a new concessions contract for San Antonio International Airport, only on the condition that Chick-fil-A be excluded. The city of San Antonio was then accused of being discriminatory of the restaurant chain’s religious beliefs.
In April, San Jose International Airport (SJC) also planned to have a Chick-fil-A and that city’s City Council decided to hang rainbow flags in support of people in the LGBTQ community and pink, blue and white flags for transgender rights at or near the Chick-fil-A that’s due to open in SJC in May.
And now it’s May and guess what? Chick-fil-A has just signed a lease to open a franchise at Miami International Airport. But Miami Commissioner Michael Gongora placed an item on the city’s upcoming agenda that urges Miami-Dade County to rescind the lease. From The Miami Herald: “In Gongora’s resolution, filed May 16, the commissioner noted that Chick-fil-A has “become known for its exclusionary views on the LGBTQ community and gay marriage.”
““The city of Miami Beach has a long history of protecting and promoting the rights of LGBTQ individuals and has long refused to contract with businesses that support discrimination against the LGBTQ community,” his resolution continues, as per the Miami Herald.
The intended Chick-fil-A would be under the auspices of the franchise operator, Jackson Soul Food, Inc., which is female and minority controlled, that won the bid to operate the fast food restaurant at MIA. It’s also questionable that a Commissioner from Miami Beach even has a say in what happens regarding a franchisee in Miami-Dade County. But he’s apparently still going to try.
Should we take a pool of what airport Chick-fil-A will try to open at in June and who will fight it?
