Sometimes international travel can be a breeze. Just have a plane ticket, a valid passport and sometimes maybe a visa or a visa waiver, and you’re free to go to almost any country you want. But sometimes you may be traveling to a country that may not have the same health care standards as where you live and you’ll need one or more vaccinations to ensure you’ll stay free of diseases and other health issues that may be present in the place you’re visiting. The issue becomes even more complicated if you’re traveling with children or if you yourself have a chronic disease or are immune-compromised or pregnant, among other issues.
So if you have to go somewhere internationally, what do you do, and how do you find out what steps in need to take, in terms of vaccinations, you should get before you travel?
Fortunately for travelers from the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have done all the hard work for you and have an entire page full of info and links devoted to keeping you healthy during your travels.
The page has health notices for recent illness breakouts (i.e. measles, Ebola, polio), a disease directory, resources and general updates for worldwide health and about Zika virus. Most importantly, though, it has a list of just about every country in the world and what vaccines you should get for each country you plan to visit. The list includes specifications for those working outside (i.e. building houses or exploring caves), who are adventurous eaters, who will be with or around animals, who plan to get tattoos or piercings, etc. There’s also a list for medical professionals, so they know about the CDC’s recommendations from a physician’s point of view (i.e. dosing information to prevent diseases such as Hepatitis A, Cholera and Malaria, treatment options for Rabies and Typhoid, etc.)
Here’s an example of what’s on the main page, and then you can go from there:
