The International Air Transportation Association (IATA) represents, leads and serves the airline industry. One of the responsibilities of this 70+-year-old institution has been to assign three-letter codes that designate airports around the world (i.e., ATL, PEK, LAX, etc.).
Meanwhile, in recent months, dozens of countries have shut down their borders due to the fear of coronavirus. Multiple airports around the world have also closed their doors, either due to lack of incoming/outgoing flights, or key staff members who have tested positive for the potentially deadly virus.
In response to this unprecedented worldwide change, the IATA has seen it fit to make additions to their list of 3-digit codes, to better reflect passengers’ locations of today.
“We realize these are very trying times for everyone involved in the airline industry,” said a spokesperson. “We want to help as much as we can; not just to assist airlines to get back on their feet when this crisis is over, but also to remain relevant during these trying times.”
