Just in time for the second half of spring break, Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, has FINALLY issued a stay-at-home order for the entire state.
Announced during a press conference on Wednesday, the order will go into effect at 12:01am on April 3, 2020 and mandates that Floridians stay home and “limit movements and personal interactions outside the home” to essential services or activities for the next 30 days. DeSantis said the state would follow the guidelines outlined by the Department of Homeland Security.
As of the this writing, the order doesn’t outline what activities as considered “essential,” DeSantis said a list of services will soon be released and some businesses can also be added to the list if they’re deemed essential. (ETA: the orders, including what is considered “essential” can now be found here).
In Florida counties that had already mandated their own “stay-at-home” orders, “essential activities” have usually included, among others, going to/from work, buying food and medicine, and medical care/appointments.
Joining 30 other states, plus Washington D.C., that have enacted similar statewide restrictions, this order is a long time coming. Between those who were still congregating and those visiting Florida for Spring Break, the state has seem exponential growth of coronavirus cases, with just shy 7,000 diagnosed. Hopefully we’ll now be able to help “flatten the curve.”
