No doubt many of you reading this are familiar with a rolling delay. For those who haven’t experienced the pleasure, that’s when an airline delays your flight a little bit at a time. Often the delays are announced shortly after the previously delayed time has just passed.
They cause you to hang around the gate area because it’s only another 30 minutes but eventually that ends up being 2 1/2 hours. Now it’s too late to grab a bite to eat at the airport and nothing will be open when you eventually land at your destination. But you can’t stray too far because what happens if your flight becomes undelayed?
Now airlines and hotels are starting a new trend, rolling point extensions.
You’re seeing these revisions from programs where their first effort didn’t fully take into account the length or the depth of the travel downturn.
- Wyndham originally extended points expiration through the end of May 2020. They later pushed back the date to September 30, 2020.
- Southwest Travel Funds for previously canceled flights due to expire between March-September 2020 and those issued for newly canceled flights in March-September 2020 were extended to expire in June 2021. They’ve extended the expiration date for all Travel Funds mentioned above to September 7, 2022.
On the other hand, Choice Rewards points expiration was also only extended until May 31, 2020. Choice Rewards is quickly approaching the time where they’ll have to decide to issue another extension or let all of the affected accounts go inactive and lose their points.
I hope people feel safe enough to start traveling but if it gets closer to the end of the year and people are still staying mostly at home, we’ll need to see how much loyalty these companies have to their program members.
