LaGuardia’s New Terminal B Arrivals & Departures Hall Opening

If there was ever an airport that needed a rehab, it’s LaGuardia Airport. Opened in 1939, by the 1960s it was already too small for the needs of a large metropolitan area where John Q. Public was flying more and more.

After years of planning, construction on LGA began in 2016. Continued traffic, along with construction made gridlock so bad that some people have actually left their cars and walked to the airport to ensure they didn’t miss their plane.

But finally, one goal has been reached – the new Terminal B is opening.

The space, which officially opens on June 13, will be the “home” of American Airlines, Southwest, United and Air Canada.

The 850,000SF facility is a light and bright space that has four floors. The building includes a check-in area, 16 lanes for TSA screening, baggage claim, ground transportation access, restaurants and shops. The building also offers direct connections to all other concourses (we don’t have to go outside anymore?!?!?!), including a pedestrian bridge to Gates 40–59 in the new eastern concourse, which opened in December 2018.

“The opening of the first new Arrivals and Departures Hall is a major milestone in delivering on Governor Cuomo’s vision for a brand new, world-class, 21st century LaGuardia Airport that the region deserves,” said Rick Cotton, Executive Director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “We thank the contractors, subcontractors and union construction workers who worked through the pandemic to deliver this extraordinary building on time and on budget. Today’s opening should be a shining symbol of the region’s potential for a strong economic recovery with the vitality of New York before COVID-19.”
