On our trip to Helen, Georgia, we were looking for something to do for the afternoon. One of the attractions listed was the Stovall Mill Covered Bridge.
The description sounded interesting.
Georgia’s shortest clear span covered bridge. C 1895, King-post design, one span wide and 33 feet long. Featured in Susan Hayworth’s movie, “I’d Climb the Highest Mountain.” Picnic area.
Who wouldn’t want to see the state’s shortest bridge, right?
The description on the Explore Georgia website made it sound like a nice place to visit.
It did not live up to expectations.
OK, from the outside, it did have some charm. However, when you got closer you notice that the “picnic area” was a single table located next to the gravel parking lot. This sign was the entirety of the self-guided tour.
I’ll show you a picture of the inside of the bridge if you still had any thoughts of visiting.
If we’d brought our spray paint cans with us, it might have been more fun. I don’t think anyone thinks this site is under surveillance, no matter what that sign claims.
Did this side excursion ruin our day? Of course, it didn’t. We stayed for about 10 minutes reveling in its level of non-awesomeness and got on with our lives.
If you’re a covered bridge fanatic and have to check every one of them off your list, then there might be a reason for you to visit. Otherwise, just know that this isn’t like a bridge in Madison County.
Special note to Samantha: Sorry not sorry. 😉
