Stack These Offers To Save Big On Amazon Purchases

a logo on a black background

There are currently two different offers from American Express out there that, when combined, can save you a ton of money on your Amazon purchases. You can save even more if you stack these offers on top of the Cyber Monday deals that are already up.

Offer #1

The first offer is one that’s been around for a while and is the only time when it’s a good idea to use your AMEX Membership Rewards to pay for things on Amazon. American Express and Amazon want you to use your points to pay for purchases. So much so that when you add an AMEX card that earns Membership Rewards to your Amazon account, their system is set up to automatically use your points to pay for purchases at a horrible value of 0.7 cents each. Here’s how to remove that default setting from your AMEX cards.

However, this offer makes it lucrative to pay for your Amazon purchase with Membership Rewards points, or more accurately, to use ONE Membership Rewards point towards your purchase.

Several targeted offers are going around with various savings levels. There’s a great post on how to check if you’re eligible and for what offer on Deals We Like.  Using the provided link, I’m eligible for the 20% offer with a max of $20.

After hitting “Activate Now” the offer is automatically added to your account. You’ll see the savings show up if you pay for a purchase with points.  After shopping, all you need to do is select your American Express card that earns Membership Rewards as your payment type. You then have to enter $0.01 into the space to apply Membership Rewards points.

When you check out, you’ll see the $0.01 payment along with the Amex savings from the offer.

This offer’s limitation is that the items purchased have to be sold and shipped by Amazon, not by a third party.

Offer #2

The first offer saves you money at the time of purchase. Offer #2 rewards you extra Membership Rewards for your Amazon.com purchase.

There’s a widely available AMEX Offer for eight additional Membership Rewards points for Amazon purchases.

You can only sign up with one card per person, so make sure to use a card that earns the highest number of base points. If you’re targeted for the first Amazon offer, make sure to use the card you used to enroll for this offer to make your purchase.

There’s a great breakdown of the offer in this post from Traveling for Miles.

Final Thoughts

I was fortunate enough to be targeted for both of these offers on my accounts. When I checked Sharon’s account, I had removed all of her cards from the pay with points option so it says she wasn’t eligible. I activated the option on one of her cards and will check back later to see if that changed anything. She was targeted for the AMEX Offer for the 8x extra points, so I enrolled one of her cards for that.

Not too long ago, there were hardly any ways to earn extra points with Amazon purchases. They’re still not listed on very many shopping portals. With increased competition for online shopping, Amazon has started offering these limited-time bonuses on purchases. I wonder how long they’ll continue?
