January 20, 2021 is approaching and with it, Donald Trump’s tenure as President of the United States is coming to an end. Some of his fans are still holding on to those last vestiges of hope that things will somehow turn around, and he will have 4 more years. However most of those who voted for him in 2016, and even in 2020, are more realistic and are already moving on.
Meanwhile, there are 80-something million people who voted for Joe Biden or other candidates. And of those 80+M folks who might’ve wished they could do even more than vote against Trump, there’s a once in a lifetime chance to do just that. Well, at least symbolically.
Atlantic City is auctioning off the chance to be the person who presses the button that will implode the former Trump Plaza Hotel And Casino.
Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino was the first Trump-branded casino to open in Atlantic City, back in 1984. Although popular for a few years, it quickly decreased in interest and value and the space was declared bankrupt by 1992. After Donald Trump’s few failed attempts to regain interest by expanding it, the casino and hotel eventually closed permanently in 2014 and has sat in a state of disrepair ever since (Donald made sure to have his name removed before it closed. Because, you know, appearances).
Since then, the building has sat and deteriorated. It was supposed to be demolished in 2018 but that was delayed due to funding disputes. But its implosion is finally going to happen in early 2021 since the former Trump property is now considered a danger due to falling debris in recent months.
Atlantic City mayor Marty Small said: “Some of Atlantic City’s iconic moments happened there, but on his way out, Donald Trump openly mocked Atlantic City, saying he made a lot of money and then got out. I wanted to use the demolition of this place to raise money for charity.”
The auction to have the right to “press the button” to demolish the former Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino will become a fundraiser to benefit the Boys & Girls Club of Atlantic City. They’ve hired a professional auction company to solicit bids through January 19th, when the top bidder will be revealed live.
Bids are currently being taken online and will complete as a live auction on January 19th. From liveauctioneers.com:

Click here for more info on the auction. By the way, word on the street is that Jimmy Fallon suggests we should all chip in and give the honors to Hillary Clinton. Or maybe hold the Inauguration in Atlantic City and let Joe Biden press the button. 😉
Anyway, when the deteriorating building is gone, it will leave a spot of oceanfront property. They haven’t yet determined what will go in this prime real estate space, but the mayor is open to ideas.
