I’ve previously mentioned that I’d hit a rut signing up for new credit cards. I haven’t redeemed any points for trips besides those I’d gotten back from trips canceled in 2020. My point balances are at levels I’ve never seen, along with the amount of vacation time I currently have in “the bank” at work.
I spent most of 2020 signing up for cashback cards that I’d neglected before the pandemic, but how many cards do you need that earn 1.5 to 2% back on purchases? I was really at the point where I was considering signing up for the TDECU Buc-ee’s or the Starbucks Rewards card for some variety.
Sharon took a line from Cher in Moonstruck and told me to “Snap Out Of It!”
It didn’t take long for me to find a card that made sense for us, the AMEX Gold Card. I started to look around at the best sign-up offer and there sure were plenty of them.
First, I looked at one of the offers from our own referral link.
40,000 Membership Rewards after spending $4,000 in three months. Not bad, but not what I’d seen advertised elsewhere. Then I found this offer.
60,000 Membership Rewards points after spending $4,000 in three months. That’s 50% more than our referral offer. But why should you have to spend $4,000 in three months when you could have six months to hit the same spending requirement?
Why not get the same offer with an additional 20% statement credit on restaurant spending for the first year for up to $250 back?
For every one of our readers, this link I found from Resy via Frequent Miler would, hands down, be the best offer for the card. The only problem is that I found one of Sharon’s cards has a link to 60,000 points for spending $4,000 in 6 months and we’ll get 15,000 AMEX points for the referral. So what’s worth more? 20% back on dining up to $250 or 15,000 Membership Rewards?
I prefer earning 15,000 points now instead of having to spend $1,250 in dining expenses to get $250 back. But not all of you are playing in 2 player mode when your wife can refer you to an AMEX card and for you, the RESY offer is the best one out there.
But to prove I put my money where my mouth is, I just filled out an application and now I have an AMEX Gold Card.
