Home Of World’s Largest Working Miniature Airport Makes New World’s Record

If you’re a travel geek, you may know about Knuffingen Airport, which may be the largest model airport in the world.

Housed in a museum known as Miniatur Wunderland, in Hamburg, Germany, Knuffingen  boasts:

And they even have about 250 model plane takeoffs per day!

A while back, we wrote about Miniatur Wunderland, and Knuffingen, in this post (take a look – the place is fascinating!). Besides the airplane setup, they also have miniature models of world-famous cities, a fair, and a huge model train display.

Anyway, the museum has been under a mandated closure during COVID. While it was on pause, Frederik Braun (the founder of Miniatur Wunderland) and his team set up one of their model trains with close to 3,000 wine glasses filled with varying amounts of water.

Mallets were attached to the train so they could strike the glasses as it passed them, which created musical notes. The train would up playing 2,840 notes of classical music, with melodies from Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Giuseppe Verdi, Ludwig van Beethoven, Johann Strauß, Pyotr Illych Tchaikovsky, Johann Sebastian Bach, Antonio Vivaldi, Johannes Brahms, Georges Bizet and many more.

The project’s result was a Guinness World Record for the longest melody played by a model train (anybody else surprised that they even had such a category?).

Here’s a video of the feat:

“Had there not been a lockdown, we would have thought about the project for a minute and then buried it as impossible,” said Braun. “This world record is a mega-record. It won’t be beaten anytime soon, I’m certain of that.”

Miniatur Wunderland already had the Guinness World Record for the largest model train set (and then broke its own record in 2019 by adding another 315 meters of track). So this is just another feather in its cap.

Joe and I made our first trip to Germany in December 2019, but Hamburg wasn’t on our itinerary. Guess where we’re going to go next time? 😉
