A man from Newton, MA has been accused of checking into a Boston hotel in late October with multiple high-capacity weapons, according to Boston police.
Thomas K. Morse, 37, a resident of Newton, checked into the W Hotel (a.k.a. “the Marriott brand of the impossible to understand room categories“) on Stuart Street in Boston. According to a local CBS affiliate in Boston, a hotel employee told police he felt what he believed was a gun barrel inside a soft-sided guitar case while helping Morse with his luggage.
Officials said Morse had allegedly requested a room on one of the higher floors of the hotel and also asked to bypass the typical check-in process at the front desk, as well.
Authorities were contacted, however, the police and federal agent didn’t have probable cause to search the guest and his luggage. Morse also refused requests from officers to search his sixth-floor room when they knocked at the door, according to a police report.
As officers were speaking to Morse at the entrance to his room, they saw “two black bulky backpacks” on the floor. When asked about them, Morse said they were not his. He also denied having a guitar case with him, as per police.
Hotel management canceled Morse’s reservation and he subsequently left without taking his bags. Upon his vacating the premises and abandoning his possessions, hotel staff and police entered the room, and the loaded weapons were found.
Officers recovered an AM-15 rifle with a mounted scope, a Yugoslavia MOD 59/66 rifle with an expandable stock, a loaded .45 caliber Remington 1911 R1 handgun, two large capacity magazines, and over 50 rounds of ammunition.
Police then obtained an arrest warrant based on the discovery of the weapons and took Morse into custody.
Morse was arraigned in Boston Municipal Court the following week. He pleaded not guilty to two counts of illegal possession of large-capacity firearms, two counts of illegal possession of a large-capacity feeding device, unlawful possession of ammunition, and illegal possession of a handgun. He was ordered to be held without bail pending a hearing.
“The Commonwealth is extremely concerned with this behavior and don’t believe there are any conditions of bail that will assure the safety of the community,” said Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Daniel Nucci.
Wow, I’m so glad that ended the way it did. Who knows what Morse might have been planning to do?
