Airports are busy again. Maybe not quite up to 2019 levels, but busy. And, as always, travelers who have too much for just “carry on and a personal sized bag” (or sometimes just the personal sized bag, if they’re on a flight that charges for carry on) check their luggage and trust the airlines to take care of it.
Unfortunately, that’s not what always happens. Case in point, the Broward Sheriff’s Office recently reported that two Spirit Airlines employees were caught going through people’s luggage at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport, and taking whatever they wanted from their bags.
Broward County Deputies and Spirit Airlines began to investigate 25-year-old Cush Karlson Joseph Vengeto after a pattern of more frequent complaints of “thefts of personal items from the interior of luggage which belonged to customers who flew on Spirit Airlines” emerged.
Vengeto, who has past addresses in both New York and New Jersey, was arrested while on the job at Spirit at the airport on January 18th. He’s charged with third-degree felony theft of more than $750 and less than $5,000. The judge set bail at $1,000 and a Hailey Johnson paid the bond the next day. As per the bond release report, Johnson lives with Vengeto.
Spirit confirmed another worker is also under investigation. Said a spokesperson for the airline, “Both employees were promptly suspended without pay. We do not tolerate this behavior, and we are performing a thorough investigation.”
It’s unknown from the Broward County Sheriff’s Department report if the stolen goods had been returned to passengers or what Vengeto’s intentions were.
