Remember when people from the U.S. waited what seemed like forever until we could go to Canada again? Finally, in August 2021, the gates reopened so we could get our “fix” of Banff, Ontario, Vancouver, Toronto, etc.
The Canadian government was, and is, careful about the spread of COVID. To qualify for entry as a fully vaccinated traveler you must:
- have received at least 2 doses of a COVID-19 vaccine accepted for travel, a mix of 2 accepted vaccines
- or at least 1 dose of the Janssen/Johnson & Johnson vaccine
- have received your second dose at least 14 calendar days before you enter Canada
- Example: if your second dose was anytime on Thursday, July 1, then Thursday, July 15 would be the first day that you meet the 14-day condition
- have no signs or symptoms of COVID-19
- upload proof of vaccination in ArriveCAN
- complete your ArriveCAN submission and have ArriveCAN receipt with letter I, V, or A beside your name
If you were unvaccinated and wanted to visit Canada for tourism, your chances were pretty bleak. They still are, to be honest.
But effective this past Monday, April 25th, Canada has taken steps to make things a little easier for people who want to visit The Great White North:
- Unvaccinated children aged five to 11 traveling with a fully vaccinated adult will no longer need a COVID-19 test to enter Canada.
- Fully vaccinated travelers, and children under 12 accompanying them, will no longer need to provide their quarantine plans when they enter the country.
- Vaccinated people arriving in Canada won’t need to wear a mask for 14 days, keep a list of contacts or report COVID-19 symptoms.
- Travelers will also no longer need to quarantine if someone in their group develops COVID-19 symptoms or tests positive.
Some things still haven’t changed:
- Unvaccinated individuals can only enter Canada under very specific circumstances.
- Children under five years of age still don’t require a COVID-19 test to enter Canada.
- All travelers are still required to use the ArriveCAN app to upload travel and vaccination information within 72 hours of their arrival to Canada and/or before boarding a plane or cruise ship destined for Canada.
- All travelers, regardless of vaccination status, must also continue to wear a mask throughout their entire travel journey.
- Unvaccinated children aged 5 through 11 will still need to wear a mask in public settings (including schools and day camps) for 14 days after arrival to Canada.
- You are still required to report any positive results from a government-required test if you were selected to complete one.
But still, every little bit counts, eh?
