Rental car companies love fees, probably even more than airlines and hotels do. There’s an endless number of additional charges baked into the price of your rental and even more optional fees. Most of these fees, like the CDW coverage, prepaid gas, and toll fees are unnecessary and I’m shocked that anyone pays extra for satellite radio.
However, there’s one fee that a subset of customers have to pay if they want to rent a car – the underage renter fee. If you’re under 25 years old and want to rent a car, every rental company will charge you an additional fee, ranging from $20 to $50 a day. The fee is even higher for 18 to 20-year-old drivers, and that’s if the company will even let you rent a car.
It seems unfair to charge young drivers more since they’re required to have the same insurance coverage as any other renter who’s 25 or older. But that doesn’t stop companies from charging the fee, which can add up to hundreds of additional dollars per rental.
It’s nice to see that Hertz is waiving the underage driver fee for college graduates ages 21-24.
To get the Hertz Young Renter fee waived, first, you need to join Hertz Gold Plus Rewards. (Here’s how to sign up for the rental car company loyalty programs.) Then you can put in your college information on this website.
Advance reservations are required and must include CDP# 2232366 at booking. Using this code might result in a higher rate for the rental, but the final price should still be lower than a discounted rate + Young Renter fee.
If you’re not a college graduate, it’s still possible to get the Hertz Young Renter fee waived. All you need is a AAA membership. One of the AAA perks with Hertz is waived Young Renter fees for drivers 20-24 years old.
Make sure to shop around as you might be able to find a cheaper rental with another company even with paying the young renter fee. (Here are some tips on finding the cheapest car rental.)
