There’s been a fair share of drama over a new luxury tower being built in downtown Orlando overlooking the city’s iconic Lake Eola fountain. There aren’t many options in the downtown area when it comes to luxury hotels. The closest thing is The Grand Bohemian Orlando, part of the Bonvoy Autograph Collection.
In 2021, there were rumors that three unnamed hotel brands were competing for space in the 33-story tower designed by DLR Group. The Orlando Sentinel, through its Growthspotter subsidiary, reports JW Marriott has won and will open the JW Marriott Hotel/Convention Center & Residences on the property. According to DLR Group, the project “consists of 129 luxury condominium residences, 228 full-service luxury hotel guestrooms, and 60,000-SF of convention and meeting facilities.”
The tower was initially planned to open in 2024, but the project has undergone several changes. Most significantly is the loss of the Orlando Museum of Art as a signature tenant. The museum is under intense scrutiny after an FBI raid over a set of 25 Basquiat paintings, which led to the director’s firing and the cancellation of several other major exhibitions.
Undoubtedly the downtown project had to scramble to compensate for the newly vacant space, but they’ve reconfigured the design and have added an outdoor event area on the building’s 9th-floor podium.
Hopefully, the roughest parts of the road are behind them and the developers can start the project’s building phase.
