We’ve been visiting New Braunfels, Texas for more than a decade. Over that time, we’ve developed our list of places we needed to visit. Sure, we found a good place for barbecue and somewhere to eat a fancier meal. But once we found those places, we fell into a comfortable trend of only visiting those places we knew we liked.
Admittedly, there’s nothing wrong with going to places you like, but it does limit you from trying new places. That’s what we discovered in 2021, when we looked for places offering outdoor dining. While some of our favorite haunts offered outdoor seating, others didn’t offer an outdoor option. Since we were in the midst of a pandemic, we had to look for alternate dining options.
Little did we know that there was a local institution around the corner. Krause’s Cafe was founded in 1959 when Kermit Krause bought “Gene’s Place” from his dad. Serving only a noon meal, Krause’s was frequented as a saloon and became known for its beer, dominos and card games.

What originally drew us to Krause’s Cafe was its open-air beer hall. Reminiscent of places we saw in Munich, we figured this was the best place to find authentic German food. We weren’t wrong.
At first, we received our beers from the numerous selections on tap.
Then my pretzel arrived. I learned one thing from our trip to Germany. If the pretzels are good, the meal is probably going to be good.
This pretzel with beer cheese dipping sauce was legit, so we were looking toward the rest of the meal.
While not an entree, we ordered the sausage platter, which included wild boar, venison, jackalope (rabbit & antelope), bier mustard, cheese, pickles, and pumpernickel. It was a highlight.
Sharon was a huge fan of spaetzle from our trip to Germany, so she asked if she could get it as a side dish of her chicken, which they gladly obliged.
Another person in our party ordered the Reuben, which must have been good since he ordered it again on our next visit.
I ordered the Jäger Schnitzel with spaetzle instead of potatoes.
Needless to say, we enjoyed our time at Krause’s Market.
Depending on the night of your visit, they offer authentic German entertainment.
In fact, when we tried to make a second trip on a weekend, we were told the wait for a table was at least 2 hours. So if you are looking to visit on a Friday or Saturday, you may want to make a reservation.
We feel sorry that it took us over a decade to discover a restaurant that’s a New Braunfels tradition. But now that we know it’s there, it’s become one of our must-visit places when in the area.
