I remember when the Southwest Companion Pass was the Holy Grail. Travel hackers had a system of how to get a pass every 2 years that would provide a free companion ticket for all of their Southwest flights.
Southwest has eliminated the easiest ways to get the pass, like transferring points into your account or signing up for multiple personal credit cards. But it’s not impossible to find offers where you’ll earn a Companion Pass by signing up for one credit card and meeting the spending requirement.
It’s no longer a rarity to have a Companion Pass. In fact, Southwest has taken to offering a “limited time” Companion Pass as a promotion. This is the second year Southwest is offering a Companion Pass for booking a single round-trip (or two one-way flights) during the end of the year.
If you register and book a flight today for any time between now and November 17th you’ll get a Companion Pass good for between 1/4-3/4/2023. If you didn’t get the offer in your email, register with this link.
This offer is identical to the one they offered last year, even down to the 2-day midweek window.
I jumped at the offer last year and booked a cheap trip to Atlanta so I could use the Companion Pass to pay for our trip to Hawaii. As it turned out I canceled the Atlanta flight because I found cheaper flights to Hawaii on Delta and Hawaiian Airlines.
Besides this year-end Companion Pass offer, Southwest has offered a one-year pass as a sign-up bonus for its co-brand cards at the beginning of the past two years. There are no guarantees that the offer will return in 2023 but who’s to say it won’t?
I imagine this offer is worthwhile to some who have planned travel before November and other flights on Southwest in 2023. Besides that, I wouldn’t jump unless you know how you’re going to use that Companion Pass in 2023.
