The Backstory of “Disney Parks Banning Strollers on Oct. 1st”

a group of baby strollers parked outside a building

If there’s one thing you can say about Disney parks nowadays, it’s that they’re CROWDED. Take the typical frenzy that is Disneyland and Walt Disney World, add in a dollop of revenge travel, and you’ve got parks that, well, are making Disney stockholders very, very happy.

Strollers and wagons that some people brought into the parks made the crowds even worse, because some of them can be so big – certainly larger than the baby or toddler they hold. The biggest strollers, and all wagons, were banned from Disney parks in May, 2019, with Disney saying:

Why are you reducing the size of strollers and prohibiting wagons in your theme parks and water parks? Walt Disney World Resort makes updates from time to time, and the reduction of stroller sizes is intended to ease guest flow and reduce congestion, making the park experience more enjoyable for everyone who visits. Many strollers, including many double jogging strollers, fit within these guidelines.

(This was on Walt Disney World’s website. Similar verbiage was used on Disneyland’s website).

Another issue with strollers is, unfortunately, theft. People have had items stolen from their strollers, while others, especially those with higher end strollers, have experienced their entire stroller stolen (nice, huh?).

Both the number of strollers and theft from strollers have been longtime issues at the Disney parks, so it almost wasn’t surprising when a TikTok video came out, saying that effective October 1st, all strollers would be banned from both Disneyland and Walt Disney World.

Here’s the video:

The video, of course, was satire. And, of course, when something satirical goes out there, there are always naive people who take it for the gospel. So many of the just shy 6,000 comments make it sound as if they believed Richie Wajda, the guy who posted it, hook, line and sinker.

I particularly liked this one – Florida’s apparently getting quite the bad reputation, huh? But hey, at least this writer was skeptical.

Anyway, eventually a theme park content creator who covers Walt Disney World debunked the rumor:

A Disneyland spokesperson also confirmed that the rumors were not true.

I will admit that TikTok has its place – there have been some funny, funny videos put up on the platform. But there’s been a whole lot of weird stuff, too…stuff like the Tide Pod Challenge, people sunning their perineum, and, most recently, Nyquil Chicken. Claiming that Disney is banning strollers isn’t dangerous like those are, but it does show, just as much, how gullible some people are.
