Depending on where you’re coming from and where you’re going, layovers are something of a necessary evil. That being said, all things are not equal when it comes to layovers, since some airports are simply much better than others. Some may have more options for restaurants, shopping or even just walking around and seeing the sights. And when you’re going to be stuck at an airport for more than just an hour or two, being at one of these “better” airports for layovers is always helpful.
ParkSleepFly is a company that offers packages for customers to book nights at airport adjacent hotels, and then negotiates their being able to keep their cars at said hotels while they’re out of town.
They recently gathered data from the busiest airports (as per Wikipedia) from Skytrax, Booking.com and Stacker to consider the following aspects:
- Food and beverage (calculated from ratings for landside and airside choices and prices)
- Hygiene (cleanliness ratings for seats, washrooms, public areas, and food)
- Staff service (service ratings for info & help, shopping, and food)
- Shopping facilities (landside and airside choices for shopping)
- Customer satisfaction (taken directly from Skytrax)
- Hotels within 2 miles (using info from Booking.com)
- Annual visitors (using info from Wikipedia)
to determine which airports were the best for layovers, using a grading scale of 1 through 10. Here’s what they discovered were the best airports for layovers in the U.S.:
10. O’Hare International Airport – Overall score of 3.67 out of 10
9. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta Int’l Airport – 4.11/10
8. Charlotte Douglas Int’l Airport – 4.22
7. Phoenix Sky Harbor Int’l Airport – 4.34
6. John F. Kennedy Int’l Airport – 4.56
5. Los Angeles Int’l Airport – 4.78
4. Miami Int’l Airport – 5.45
3. Denver Int’l Airport – 6.00
2. George Bush Intercontinental Airport – 6.11
1. Seattle-Tacoma Int’l Airport – 7.22
Before we get too high and mighty about some of those higher scores here in the U.S., ParkSleepFly used a similar methodology to determine the best airports for layovers outside the U.S., as well. Take a look:
10. Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport (China) – Overall score of 3.89 out of 10
7. Dubai International Airport (UAE) – 4.11/10
7. Charles de Gaulle Airport (France) – 4.11
7. Chongqing Jiangbei Int’l Airport (China) – 4.11
6. Indira Gandhi Int’l Airport (India) – 5.67
5. Xi’an Xianyang Int’l Airport (China) – 5.78
4. Shenzhen Bao’an Int’l Airport (China) – 6.67
3. Istanbul Airport (Türkiye) – 7.22
2. Shanghai Hongqiao Int’l Airport (China) – 8.44
1. Tokyo Haneda Airport (Japan) – 8.67
As you can see, airports in China took up half of the slots. To say nothing that 3 international airports were ranked as good as, or better than, the highest ranking airport in the U.S.
