One Of The First Virgin Hotels Is Now…..A Hilton???

a building with a sign on the front

Virgin Hotels opened its first location in Chicago in 2015. It was four years before the 2nd location opened to much fanfare in San Francisco. Built from the ground up in the SoMa area near the Moscone Center, here’s how Conde Nast Traveler described the hotel:

Virgin, of the city’s newest hotels, is a stunner. Built from the ground-up in SoMa, the building is a mix of regal opulence, modern decor, and bold, rich textures. The lobby is dark but inviting, with a slate-gray palette and contemporary lights. Off the lobby, the cheekily named Shag Room offers a velvet-seated lounge area with marble tabletops.

It sounds great, but opening a luxury hotel in February 2019 turned out to be not the best business plan. The lockdown happened just as the hotel became famous for its restaurants and location.

As Virgin was preparing to reopen the hotel in 2020, the property owner terminated the 20-year operating agreement, leaving the hotel in limbo. While Virgin and the owner are locked in a legal battle, Hilton announced they would reopen the hotel under the Canopy brand.

And that happened in 2022 when the hotel was renamed the Canopy by Hilton San Francisco SoMa. Looking at the website, it doesn’t appear the owners changed much of anything from when it was the Virgin Hotel.

The same goes for the rooms. It looks like they might have changed the pillows and painted a different color on the walls.

They even kept the same lamps and the signature red mini-bar refrigerators!

So if you have a bunch of Hilton Honors points and want to try out a Virgin Hotel, this may be your best opportunity. If you like the experience, you can use Virgin Points to stay at some of their other hotels.
