The Four Seasons Boston is celebrating its reopening this month after a remake of the hotel’s public spaces and restaurants. I’m talking about the original Four Seasons, by the way, located near Boston Public Garden, since there are two Four Seasons in Boston. The hotel closed in January to complete renovations to the arrival area, lobby, and restaurants. The new interiors are intended to bring intimacy to the wide lobby by dividing it into several unique spaces.
One new feature is the check-in desks. The tooled leather desks stand in front of an impressionist mural of the nearby gardens in a not-so-subtle nod to the works of Maxfield Parrish.
The Four Seasons has also opened a new restaurant, Coterie, open for lunch, dinner and bar service. This brings back a feature that was notably missing from the hotel before the renovations. Across from Coterie is the Library, a lounge where you can enjoy a cocktail and read a book while waiting for your friends to arrive.
Several popular spots remain, albeit with some changes. The second-floor restaurant Aujourd’hui returns but currently only serves breakfast to hotel guests. The sixth-floor Sanctuary courtyard is where guests can enjoy meals from the restaurant or room service menus.
Also returning to guest floors is “The Vaults,” complimentary pantries containing snacks, treats and beverages that can be accessed 24 hours a day.
Final Thoughts
It’s not easy being a luxury hotel. When you’re charging guests $900+ a night, people expect a level of service and design. While you can maintain service levels with an engaged staff, customers’ design tastes can be fickle. While a large open lobby was in style 10 years ago, now it appears dated, as guests want intimate spaces.
This means that you need to reinvent yourself every decade or so to remain relevant. For the Four Seasons Boston, that meant out with the flowers and marble and in with the tiles, mural and leather desks.
From the pictures, it looks like the hotel did a great job, and it’s impressive that they completed all the work on a compressed timetable to reopen when the guests reappear in the spring.
