When you mention Key West, most people think of certain things. Jimmy Buffet. Sunsets. Duval St. If you’re of a certain age, the bookstore that Judy Blume owns (how many of you can say that you photobomed Judy Blume?)

But for a lot of people, Key West means bars. Capt. Tony’s Saloon. Green Parrot Bar. Sloppy Joe’s. Rick’s Treehouse Bar. The list goes on and on. In fact, there are 43 bars on Duval St. alone!

One of the most iconic bars on Key West is the Hog’s Breath Saloon. Located in Old Town, at the corner of Front and Duval Streets, it’s a convenient location for locals, in-town tourists and even day visitors from cruise ships.

The original Hog’s Breath Saloon was established in Ft. Walton Beach, FL (that’s clear on the other side of the state, up in the pan handle, about halfway between Panama City Beach FL and Mobile, AL). But by 1988, its owner, Jerry Dorminy, had relocated it to Key West, where it quickly became known for its lively atmosphere, live music (they’ve even got a live webcam of its musical performers!), surprise celebrity appearances (Kenny Chesney has taken the stage a few times), signature cocktails and good food.

Jerry Dorminy died of cancer in 2006, at the age of 68. His wife, Sherry has been holding the torch as owner of the celebrated bar every since.

However nothing gold can stay, and it’s been announced that David Siegel, president and CEO of Westgate Resorts, and longtime business associate Jim Gissy, have purchased the iconic Hog’s Breath Saloon.

“Westgate Resorts recognizes the unique cultural significance of the venue and is committed to preserving its authentic spirit while enhancing the overall guest experience,” the press release states.

Sherry Dorminy was quoted as saying, “”I am honored that Mr. Gissy & Mr. Siegel will continue the tradition of Hog’s Breath in Key West for many years. My late husband would be proud. After 47 years, it’s time to pass the torch. I am so grateful to the staff, especially my twin sister Sheryl, for making Hog’s Breath the beloved institution it is today!”

Jim Gissy, Siegal’s business partner, stated, “We are honored to continue the long tradition of Hog’s Breath Saloon as a staple of the Key West area. This iconic establishment holds a special place in the hearts of many, and we are dedicated to preserving its unique charm and authenticity. We are committed to ensuring that Hog’s Breath Saloon remains a vibrant hub of entertainment and enjoyment for years to come.”

Seigel is known for bringing his Westgate Resort timeshare to nearly 2 dozen tourist towns across the country. Not surprisingly, plans for expansion of the Hog’s Breath Saloon brand are already underway.
