The Names Locals Call Tourists Behind Their Backs

a man with his tongue out

If you visit a tourist town, you can be relatively sure it will have lots of things. Plenty of hotels, B&Bs, Airbnbs,  and other places to stay. Lots of opportunities for shopping and dining. And, of course, the thing or things that you came there to see.

Meanwhile, if you live in a tourist town, you’re well aware the area where you live will have lots of things too, thanks to tourists. For local business owners, it means more money coming in. For people who live and work in the area though, tourists mean more crowds, more traffic and longer waits everywhere, among other things.

So it shouldn’t be surprising that some people who live in tourist towns have their own “special” words for tourists. Most (albeit not all) of the time the colloquialisms are not very nice; they’re used as an insult. And they’re rarely said where or when tourists can hear them. Here are some of them.

Note: As always, we’ve altered the terms that include adult verbiage in the English language. We realize that some of these words/terms are NSFW in their own language. However in English, well, we don’t know any better, so we’ve not taken the liberty to alter them.
