I have many travel credit cards to my name (even more if you count the ones Sharon has). I keep some of them, like the American Express Blue Business Plus, because they earn a lot of points. I have other cards, such as the Chase Sapphire Reserve, because of the travel benefits. I keep still others because of the specific perks I get – the Chase Disney Visa is a good example.
However, there’s one more card that I’ve wanted for years, for no good reason. I’ve held off but now the card is even better than before.
My Desire for the Buc-ee’s Credit Card
I mean, I really want to have one. I know there’s no rational reason for this. All the other cards I have fit a need or serve a purpose and this card doesn’t offer anything I don’t already have.
Benefits and Features of the Buc-ee’s TDECU Credit Union MasterCard
I mean here’s a list of the benefits of the card:
- 0% Introductory APR on Purchases for six months
- $2,000 minimum Line of Credit
- 0% Introductory APR for Balance Transfers for twelve months
- 7.99% – 17.99% APR
- $100,000 Travel Accident Insurance
- ID Theft Protection
- Baggage Delay Insurance
- MasterCard® Global Service
- No currency conversion charges
- Year-end Charge Summary
- No Penalty Pricing, Annual Fee, Cash Advance Fee
- Minimum Payments as low as 2% of balance (minimum $18)
- Convenient Payment Options
- 25-day Interest-Free Grace Period if balance is paid in full by next payment due date
- Worldwide Acceptance and ATM access
In short, this card doesn’t give me any benefits I value. It doesn’t earn airline miles, transferable points or even cashback as a perk.
However, a new benefit was recently added to the card.
Cardholders save 5% in-store and at the pump at Buc-ee’s.
Previously, the card only provided a 10-cent per gallon discount on fuel purchases. I’d much rather save 5% on all of the food and merchandise that we buy when we visit Buc-ee’s (Note from Sharon: He makes it sound as if we buy ALL THAT MUCH from Buc-ee’s. OK, on second thought, yeah, we do).
Eligibility Requirements for TDECU Membership
I’ve been looking at this card for years and I passed for several reasons. I didn’t want to burn an application on the card and I didn’t think I’d ever become eligible for one, so it wasn’t a consideration.
TDECU membership is open to anyone over the age of 18 who:
- is a family member of a current TDECU member
- lives within a 10-mile radius from a TDECU Member Center
- is an employee, retiree or family member of an employee of a company TDECU serves
- is a member of an organization TDECU serves
- lives, works, worships or attends school in either the Greater Houston, Victoria, Dallas-Fort Worth or Gulf Coast areas.
You’re also eligible for TDECU Membership if you’re a resident of the state of Texas and are an existing member of, or you agree to join, the Texas Consumer Council (TXCC).
I haven’t been applying for many new cards and we’re both below 5/24 right now so I’m able to “waste” a spot. I looked at the rules closer and found two possible routes to join TDECU, both of which are legit. Am I really going to apply for a Buc-ee’s credit card?
Is It Worth Applying for the Buc-ee’s Credit Card?
This reminds me of when I really wanted to have Mickey Mouse checks. Remember when we all used to write out checks to pay bills? Way back when (I’m talking the 90s or maybe even earlier), SunTrust in Florida (now Truist) offered checks with Mickey Mouse on them and I thought they were the coolest thing in the world. I wanted those checks. I mean, I REALLY wanted them! But you needed to live near a SunTrust bank to open an account and I lived in New Jersey, about 1000 miles away from the nearest branch. By the time I moved to Florida in early 2001, anyone could get Disney checks by ordering them from the ad in the Sunday newspaper (I actually had Disney checks before I moved to Florida). But before then? Oh, I wanted them SO MUCH!
Before, the Buc-ee’s credit card is just something I wanted. Now, I could save some money by having it in my wallet.
I’m not actually recommending this card to anyone else. My desire to have it has no basis in reality. But if you want to apply, the sign-up page is here.
