I have to admit that I can be a bit of a nerd when it comes to certain topics. That’s why I’ve spent hours researching how to book award flights. Luckily, there are even bigger nerds than me who have figured out how to have computers do most of the work. But being a nerd isn’t a bad thing. It means you’re curious about how things work. Whether it’s staring at the stars and pondering the universe or figuring out why the drain on my sink doesn’t work the way it should, I’m always up for discussion and research. Often times I spend a bit too much time doing that research (Note from Sharon: No, really????).
When it comes to travel, we share the same curiosity. For instance, how does a hotel determine which guest stays in which room? Our research on the topic of assigning hotel rooms revealed that the process is not as simple as it may seem. There are several factors that hotel staff consider when assigning rooms to guests. These factors include the guest’s preferences, the type of room available, the location of the room within the hotel, the view from the room, and the amenities that come with the room. Additionally, hotels may also take into account the guest’s loyalty status, special requests, and any previous complaints or issues that the guest may have had during their previous stays. All of these factors are carefully weighed and considered to ensure that guests are assigned the most suitable room for their needs and preferences.
But who is it that does the assignments? That all depends on what type of hotel you are staying in.
I recently watched a video that explained how hotel room assignments are made. Although the basic principles remain the same, the process can vary depending on the size of the hotel. For instance, at a small boutique hotel, the front desk staff is usually responsible for assigning rooms. However, at a large resort or convention hotel, a team of people working behind the scenes handles the task, and the front desk staff has no control over room assignments.
So, the next time you want a room with a king bed and all they have is a room with two queen beds, understand that the hotel staff isn’t being difficult. There could have been a dozen reasons why you couldn’t get the exact room you wanted if you didn’t pay for that exact room.
