When it comes to booking a trip, many things can cause concern. However, when booking an award ticket through an airline partner, the possibility for things to go wrong is multiplied. It is important to ensure that the ticket is actually issued and not just a reservation that was never finalized in the system. Additionally, you may have to deal with having two different PNRs from each airline and deciding which one to use. If there are any flight changes, it’s possible that you may not receive the updated information if you booked through a different loyalty program.
You might feel that you’re in the clear when you get to the online check-in process. But what happens when you go to print your boarding pass and the name doesn’t exactly match your drivers license or passport?
For example, instead of your name being John Smith, it reads Johnmr Smith. The computer system added your title to the end of your name and now it doesn’t exactly match your ID. I’ve also had times where the system merges my first and middle names into the first name field.
There are endless threads online about people having their names incorrectly printed on a boarding pass. Based on their experience, it’s not a problem if the information matches your ID. For example, having a boarding pass with the name Johnmr Smith would not be a problem, but if it says Johnmrs Smith, that might be an issue. The same goes if the ticket has your names reversed with the first and last names flipped.
If the information is incorrect, it’s best to contact the airline to get it corrected if you catch it in time. It’s better than trying to get it straightened out at the airport.
But having your title at the end of your name isn’t a problem as long as that title matches your ID.
