All three of the larger NYC area airports have been going through various phases of construction for what feels like forever but is actually “only” less than a decade.

The terminal features approximately 1 million square feet of space and offers 33 gates to handle larger aircrafts, as well as a modernized common-use check-in area, security and baggage claim areas expected to efficiently handle an estimated 13.6 million passengers a year.
There’s still plenty of work for PANYNJ to do at EWR. However the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has its own work that it’ll be doing at the airport throughout the rest of the month that could affect passengers in Terminals A and B, depending on time frame.
TSA is in the midst of upgrading its screening technology throughout the country, and now it’s apparently EWR’s turn.
“To ensure continued operations and maintain a state of good repair, construction and maintenance activities may occur from time to time at the airport. The Port Authority of NY & NJ understands construction and maintenance may cause temporary inconvenience and works closely with contractors to ensure impacts to customers are minimized,” TSA officials wrote in the advisory.
With that, lanes will be closed at security checkpoints from May 6 to May 10 at Terminal A and then from May 13 to June 21 at Terminal B.
Thankfully, the work isn’t scheduled for the Saturday, Sunday or Monday of Memorial Day weekend. However it will impact some gates the Friday before and Tuesday after the holiday.
The TSA recommends that travelers to need to use Terminal A should get there at least two hours before their departure times. Those using Terminal B should arrive at least three hours before their flight.
Here’s the full schedule for Terminal B (which serves Alaska, Spirit, Emirates, Lufthansa and several other international airlines:
- May 13 – May 17: Gates B40 – B47, Gates B60 – B68
- May 20 – May 24: Gates B40 – B47
- May 28 – May 31: Gates B40 – B47, Gates B51 – B57
