Reminder: Global Entry Price Increase + Other Trusted Traveler Changes

a row of machines in a line

If you need to get or renew your Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI membership soon, this is a friendly reminder that their prices are increasing (one of them will cost over twice as much) on Tuesday, October 1st.

The U.S. Customs and Border Patrol announced the fee changes in early April.

On April 2, a final rule was published in the Federal Register, harmonizing the fees for the NEXUS, Global Entry, and SENTRI programs, better reflecting the program costs. The new fees, which have not been updated in over 15 years, will go into effect October 1, 2024. As these programs have matured and expanded, updating the fee structures is critical to the continuation and management of the programs.

The cost for the Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI programs will each be increased to $120 (they currently cost $100, $50 and $50, respectively, via an a la carte fee structure).

Although announced in April of this year, plans for this increase actually root back to September 2020.

There is some good news, though:

But kids will be free!

Once the new pricing structure goes into effect, minors under the age of 18 who are applying for Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI status will have their application fees waived when a parent or legal guardian is already a member of, or is applying for Global Entry, NEXUS or SENTRI.

Previously, families had to pay for minors to get Global Entry. So there’s that.

What about PreCheck and FAST?

There’s been no announced price increase for PreCheck (its price was quietly changed not quite 2 years ago) or FAST (that one is for truck drivers for border crossing between the US and Mexico or the US and Canada).

What are Global Entry, NEXUS and SENTRI?

Global Entry

Global Entry allows pre-approved, low-risk travelers faster and easier entry into the U.S. by eliminating processing lines and paperwork. However, travelers must be pre-approved for the program and are required to undergo a background check and in-person interview before enrollment.

Global entry is available to citizens of several countries. Having Global Entry status can also get you some benefits in some other countries, as well.

NEXUS

NEXUS program allows pre-screened travelers expedited processing when entering the U.S. and Canada by way of air and sea travel via dedicated processing lanes at designated northern border ports of entry, NEXUS kiosks (when entering Canada by air) and Global Entry kiosks (when entering the U.S. via Canadian Preclearance airports).

SENTRI

SENTRI (which stands for Secure Electronic Network for Travelers Rapid Inspection) allows expedited clearance for pre-approved, low-risk travelers upon arrival in the U.S. via land border ports in Mexico. To qualify, members must be pre-approved for the program and undergo a background check and in-person interview before enrollment.
