First things first – I want to mention how nice it is to be able to vent about my minor travel problems.
My past problems were with hotels that didn’t provide enough pillows for the number of guests in the room and ones that only put nightstands or shelves on one side of the bed.
I’ve complained about overly complicated shower controls or ones you can’t reach from outside the shower. This pet peeve also applies to the bathroom.
Luxury Hotel Showers
I love a nice shower in a luxury hotel. A well-designed shower with good water pressure and temperature control can be a high point of your trip, like this one at the Park Hyatt Washington D.C.
Or this shower at the Goldener Hirsch in Salzburg.
Or the shower at the Nobu Hotel in Las Vegas.
However, a poorly designed shower can ruin your day before it gets started.
Poorly Designed Shower
At first glance, this bathroom looks nice, except for being a bit on the small side.
That is, until you take a shower and open the glass door, thereby releasing all the water that collected along the ledge and letting it fall onto the floor.
To avoid the same thing happening the following day, I made sure there was no water by the door. The problem is that the water collects by the drain and the ledge slants towards the door. Since you have to open the door all the way to get out, there is no way to keep the water from leaking onto the floor.
The thin towels couldn’t capture all the water and it went all the way under the sink.
The last thing you want to do when getting out of the shower is walk onto a soggy towel. Ewwwww.
With this issue, there’s no easy fix for the hotel. It’s a design flaw with the shower. I feel the most for the housekeeping crew, who must collect the dozens of waterlogged towels from rooms every day.
I want to say this is a problem isolated to this particular hotel, but we have the same problem at 5% to 10% of places we’ve stayed.
