The AMEX Platinum Variant I Didn’t Know About

a credit card on a black and white surface

Love them or hate them, metal credit cards are here to stay. They’ve become something of a status symbol, and for many people, they represent prestige. In fact, research shows that metal cards are perceived as more important, and therefore, they make the person paying with them seem more important. (For a deep dive, check out this article)

And who am I to argue? When Chase announced the return of the fully metal Ritz-Carlton Card, it caused a stir among cardholders, who were thrilled to say goodbye to the lighter, metal-coated version. (If you missed it, here’s the full story: Ritz-Carlton Credit Card: Is the Fully Metal Card Making a Comeback?)

Even the Black Card (not that Black Card, the other one) markets itself as the heaviest card on the market, as if weight equals value. I’ve always found that angle a bit ridiculous, and if you want a laugh, take a look at our take on bad credit card marketing.

But let’s be honest—what if you don’t want your wallet weighed down by these metallic monsters? If you’re like me and juggle two or three of these heavy hitters while traveling, you know the struggle. After a while, it feels less like carrying a credit card and more like hauling gym equipment in your pocket.

Well, good news for us minimalist travelers: American Express now offers a plastic version of its Platinum Card—and it’s made from 85% recycled materials.

Discovering the AMEX Platinum Variant

For those who don’t know, AMEX already lets you customize the Platinum Card with a choice of three designs: the classic metal version and two limited-edition artist options.

I’ve always stuck with the traditional design, but the eco-friendly plastic option has me seriously reconsidering.

Why I’m Switching to This Lesser-Known Option

Here’s why: I only use the Platinum Card when traveling, primarily for lounge access. Carrying the extra weight around for an entire trip was always annoying. Now, with the recycled plastic option, I can enjoy the same perks without feeling like I’m doing pocket squats every time I leave the hotel.

Switching is simple, too. If you’re ready to ditch the metal, log in to your AMEX account, head to the Account Services tab, and order a replacement card.

So, what about you? Would you opt for the plastic Platinum Card, or are you still team metal? Let me know in the comments!
