Orlando International Airport (MCO) is a victim of its own popularity. As one of Florida’s busiest airports alongside Miami, MCO has launched an aggressive expansion program to accommodate the growing number of passengers passing through daily. The most notable developments include the new Terminal C complex and a forthcoming rental car facility, both aimed at easing congestion and improving efficiency.
Modernization of the North Terminal
While these expansion projects will transform the airport, there is also a need to modernize the existing terminals while waiting for new construction to be completed—a process that could take years or even decades. To address this, the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) has announced a $1.7 billion renovation of the North Terminal, which comprises Terminals A and B. Given the terminal’s outdated design, characterized by low ceilings, narrow corridors, and traffic congestion, a complete demolition or repurposing isn’t feasible. Instead, the airport plans to enhance the existing infrastructure.
Expected Renovation Features
In October 2024, the Orlando Sentinel provided insight into what passengers can expect from the upcoming renovations. The North Terminal Complex’s physical layout will largely remain the same, but passengers can look forward to a modernized interior, an updated lineup of stores and restaurants, and improved seating with digital amenities.
New Restaurants and Retail Spaces
In December 2024, the airport authority approved the first wave of new restaurants and retail, spanning over 77,000 square feet. According to the Orlando Business Journal, the new lineup includes a mix of national brands and local favorites:
- Stasio’s Italian Deli
- Smoke & Donuts
- Kelly’s Ice Cream
- SoDough Detroit Pizza
- Milkhouse
- Jam-Eng Caribbean and English Cuisine
- 4 Rivers Smokehouse
- Otto’s High Dive
Designs for these spaces are still in progress, with renovations set to begin in mid-2025. While 4 Rivers Smokehouse has been one of our favorite local restaurants, we’re most looking forward to an outpost of Kelly’s Ice Cream.
Second Round of Bidding for Concessions
Recent reporting from Orlando Business Journal confirms that the next round of bids for retail and restaurant spaces in Terminals A and B is now open. This second round includes seven packages totaling more than 58,582 square feet. Bids are due by April 25, and the selected concessions are expected to be presented to the aviation authority’s board in July.
A Holistic Approach to Leasing
Yovannie Rodriguez, GOAA’s Chief Administrative Officer, emphasized during the December 11 board meeting that the airport’s concessions master plan aims for a more holistic approach to leasing rather than renewing leases individually as they expire.
“The plan is designed to provide opportunities for small, medium, and large companies to showcase a mix of local, regional, and national brands,” Rodriguez stated.
Looking Ahead
For those of us who fly through MCO regularly, there’s no denying that parts of the A & B terminal complex need a facelift. While some areas have refreshed dining options, there are entire sections where the only choices are no-name restaurants or fast food outlets.
With the $1.7 billion renovation of the North Terminal, Orlando International Airport is taking significant steps to modernize its facilities while maintaining its ability to serve growing passenger numbers. The addition of new retail and dining options, along with infrastructure improvements, will enhance the traveler experience. As these renovations progress, passengers can look forward to a more modern, efficient, and welcoming airport that balances convenience with a commitment to showcasing local businesses.
