Your happy place is where you just feel right. It may be somewhere you visit often or somewhere you’ve only been once. It’s a place that envelops you and covers you in a feeling of happiness and joy. It’s a place where you’re sad when you have to leave and all you can think about is how and when you’re going to get back.
Before Guinan shows up and reminds me that I’m stealing the description of the Nexus from Star Trek: Generations, let me explain.
A happy place means something different to everyone.
It could be sailing on a cruise ship
or skiing down a mountain
or going to the Grand Canyon
For most of my life, my happy place was Orlando, FL and, more specifically, Walt Disney World. When I was a kid, I was obsessed about our next trip as soon as the previous one was over.
Luckily I met someone who loved my happy place as much as I did. In fact, we got married and moved to our happy place. Over time our happy place became a specific location at Walt Disney World; The Adventurers Club, which was an interactive comedy club at WDW’s Pleasure Island entertainment district. We spent endless evenings there and met numerous people who we still call friends. We even had the rehearsal dinner before our wedding there.
As all good things are prone to do, The Adventurers Club closed in September of 2008 and was left to live on only in our memories. Sure, there’s an occasional one-off reunion or some sighting of a character or two at a special event but that’s not the same. Finally, for a single night we were able to return to our happy place; a New Year’s Eve party in 2015 at Disney World that featured a full night of shows from the club. It was an amazing night but it also reminded us of how much we missed it.
Luckily, Sharon and I both have other happy places and we visit the places each of us like. Maybe one of us likes it a more than the other but that’s the sacrifices you have to make.
I thought I knew where Sharon’s happy place was. You see, I saw her face when she was at the Grand Canyon a few months ago and figured that had to be it.
I was wrong. When I asked her for this article, it turned out that her happy place looks more like this:
Who knew? She said she likes New York City because it just feels right to her. It’s comfortable and it’s the world she grew up in, so it feels the most “normal” to her and is the place where she feels she fits.
You see, that’s why finding your happy place is a perfect example of Your Mileage May Vary. Sharon likes New York City. For me, it’s mountains.
This picture, taken at Morraine Lake in Canada, is the perfect example of us traveling to places where one of us likes it there more than the other. I look like I couldn’t be any happier. That’s not a smile for the camera. That’s just a smile. A real smile.
Sharon, on the other hand, looks like she’s so happy…….. that I’m happy.
I’m very lucky that I found someone who will put up with me insisting to occasionally go to my happy place. Sharon’s also lucky that she’s married to someone who doesn’t need much arm twisting to make a trip to New York.
What’s your happy place?

Southern Utah. Love that area and all its beautiful parks.
We’ve been to Arches and loved it. My dad and his wife went to Zion and the pictures were breathtaking.
Arches and Zion are awesome! The Angel’s Landing hike in Zion is the best hike in all the parks, in my opinion. If you ever make it back, check out Bryce Canyon. It is my favorite.
Wonderful pictures,
when I look at them individually,I think each time, this is my happy place, and then No, this is. You are very lucky 🙂
St Martin
La Mariana Sailing Club in Sand Island/Honolulu. It’s an escape for the real world. The best place to watch the boats bob in the marina and have a green gecko jump on your table while sipping a mai tai, surrounded by vintage tikis from all the classic bygone bars of the golden tiki era.
I try to keep the mindset that wherever I am at the moment is my happy place. The only way to be truly happy is to be here now. Easier said than done sometimes, especially at work, but in my travels I can be equally happy in the desert, WDW, historical sites, mountains…you name it. There is beauty and joy to be found everywhere if you look for it.
I love the mountains, but for some reason I seem to connect most with the desert! I never expected to like it before I visited, but now I can’t stay away from the southwest!
Love the central coast of California, particularly Cambria, CA…
