It’s been said that the sense of smell is the strongest associated with memories. I can attest to that, as there are smells that bring me back to a book I had in toddlerhood, watching Mr. Bill on Saturday Night Live in the late 1970s and early 1980s, and all the years I worked in a hospital throughout the 1990s.
Disney parks have a lot of smells, some intentional, some not, that you’re likely to encounter. The Grand Californian and Wilderness Lodge both smell like wood. There’s also the dustiness of the Haunted Mansion, the wetness of water-based attractions Pirates of the Caribbean, Grizzly River and Splash Mountain, the scent of Rome burning in the Spaceship Earth attraction, the various smells pumped into Soarin’, Flights of Passage and Journey Into Your Imagination, and, if the wind is right, even the smell of the fireworks they set off in/near the parks. Past, well-loved and remembers scents include the orange groves in Horizons, vanilla in front of the bakery on Main Street USA and the seared meats and BBQ sauce at Big Thunder BBQ.
Some entrepreneurs have caught onto this and, instead of taking the bull by the horns, have taken it by the nose, and sell candles and other items that mimic some past and present favorite scents from Disney parks. Here are a few of them:
3 Cheeky Chicks Wax Co
This company sells scents as wax melts, candles and room sprays. Disneyesque scents include Red Head, Plaza Parlor, Churro, Wilderness Lodge, Pineapple Twirl, Popcorn Cart, Pop Century, Oh Mickey, Burnt Empire, Tiki Room, Pixie Dust, Best Day Ever, Port Orleans Lobby, and many more.
Fandoms and Fairytales
This company sells wax melts in themes that include Disney (i.e. Pineapple Whip, Soaring Over Horizons, Breakfast With Mickey, Rope Drop, Cupcake Crawl and Whosits & Whatsits Galore), Star Wars (such as Princess Leia’s Cinnamon Buns, Wookie Cookie, Vader Artoo and Threepio), Superhero (All American Hero, Poison Ivy, Diana and Dark Knight) and Harry Potter (including Butterbrew, Yule Ball, Loyal & Kind and Courage & Bravery).
Lux-Illume
Lux-Illume has a line of candles called Circa 1955, which is inspired by the attraction, treats and atmospheres found at the Disney parks. They sell scents such as We Wants The Redhead, Main Street Marceline, Beach Resort, Over California, When In Rome, Mickey Waffles, Pineapple Float, I Want A Churro, Florida Grand, On The Horizon, and many more. They sell themed bundles such as Snack or Explore themes, and offer subscription service to keep the scents coming.
Magic Candle Company
They say they have the most magical scents on earth and I can believe it. Their scents include Pirate Water, Polynesian Paradise, Haunted, Rome Burning, Flying Over Orange Groves, Bakery, Wilderness Campground, Banshee Flight, Contemporary, Popcorn Stand and a few dozen more. They offer your choice of 16 ounce candles, 8 ounce candles, 4 ounce room spray, wax melts and air fresheners and they even have a subscription service so you receive new scents every month. They ship internationally.
Main Street Melts
This company, run as an Etsy page, sells room sprays, soy wax melts, tea lights, lotions and 9 ounce candle jars, Scents include Tiki Room, Saratoga Springs, Churros, Tiki Room, Aloha Pineapple, Pirates Life, Hundred Acre Wood, Jambo, Ohana Bread Pudding, Pandora, Sea Witch, Horizons Calling, Cinderella’s Castle, Poly Village, The Grey Stuff, Main Street Bakery and many more. They offer free shipping on domestic orders of $50 or more.
Maple & Whisky
This shop is based out of the U.K., in Colchester, and sells 12 and 8 ounce jar candles, wax melts, reed diffusers and room sprays.
