Back in March of this year, I wrote about how Sharon applied for the now discontinued IHG Reward Club credit card from Chase just before it disappeared. The offer she signed up for awarded her 60,000 IHG points for spending $1,000 in the first three months of being a cardholder. That wasn’t bad.
However, shortly after applying I saw an article on the Doctor of Credit website:
Applied For Chase IHG Card? Don’t Forget To Ask For A Match To 80,000 Points
Turns out there was an 80,000 point offer still listed online. I never could get that link to work for an application but the website was still out there. Why not ask Chase to match that offer?
It turns out Chase is one of the easiest banks to ask if you want them to match a current offer even if you applied for a different one. I logged in to Sharon’s account and sent a secure message to Chase.
I signed up for this card and was approved the other day. I saw a page for 80,000 IHG points after spending $2,000 but wasn’t able to get that to work. Can I still get that offer?
We received a quick reply from a Chase representative.
Sharon, we reviewed your credit card account and found that the offer you requested
was 80,000 bonus points after you spend $2,000.00 on purchases in the first 3 months your account is open.
Our records show you haven’t met the spending requirement. After you have met the required spend, please reply to this email to claim the offer.
Once we spent $2,000 on the card, I sent them a single sentence.
I’ve now met the $2,000 in spending to receive the 80,000 points.
The reply was exactly what I wanted to see.
Sharon, we reviewed your credit card account and found that you’re eligible for the new offer you requested. The new offer was 80000 bonus points after you spend $2000 on purchases in the first three months your account is open.
We were able to add 20000 bonus points to your account to match the new offer. This adjustment will appear on the next credit card statement.
We now have 20,000 extra IHG points. That’s the same amount I just used to book a room at the Candlewood Suites in New Branufels, TX. Since a cash rates for this room was $200 a night, that’s earning $50 per sentence. I wish I could make that much money from the rest of the things I write 🙂
