Citi apparently feels that for their credit card portfolio, less is more. And when I say less, I mean cutting most insurance coverages for all their cards as well as less frequent sign-up bonuses for the American Airlines co-brand cards (now increased from 24 months to 48 months). Citi apparently wasn’t done, as it looks like they’ve now reduced the sign-up bonus on their Citi Rewards+ card.
What happened?
The Citi Rewards+ card was introduced in January 2019 as a card with no-annual fee that earned Citi ThankYou points. The ThankYou points earned with the card can be cashed in for gift cards or to pay with points at Amazon.com or BestBuy.com. However, if you have one of the premium Citi cards like the ThankYou Premier or Prestige, the points earned with the Rewards+ card could be transferred to those cards and then transferred out to one of the ThankYou program’s partners.
The card launched with a 15,000 point sign-up bonus if you spent $1,000 in three months, which isn’t bad for a no-annual-fee card. In May, sign up links for the card started to show up for 20,000 points when spending the same $1,000.
Since getting a Rewards+ card was part of my Citi strategy, I decided to get moving and apply for one.
I found a link to the 20,000 point bonus for the card on a website I follow, and clicked.
No matter which website I went to that had a link to the 20,000 point sign-up offer, they all ended up at that same 404 error page. Whomp-whomp
The redirect took me to the main sign-up page for the Rewards+ card.
Even the Credit Karma link for the card had changed.
Drats!
Final Thoughts
I forgot to follow my own advice, If you snooze, you lose.
Oftentimes banks will alert everyone when they’re going to pull an offer to get everyone who was on the fence about signing up to make a decision. Either apply or not.
There are other times when offers just go away with no notice or fanfare. You just go to the page to sign up and the new offer is there. Like the other one never happened.
This reduced offer is making me think about another option available to sign up for the Citi Rewards+ card but I still haven’t made up mind about that one.
Never mind – it looks like that path also leads to the “Page Not Found” dead end.
