The One Thing I Wish Hotel Housekeeping Would Stop Doing (And Why It Drives Me Crazy)

by joeheg

When staying in a hotel, I try and make my room feel more “homey.” I’ll unpack things immediately, keep my stuff organized instead of just throwing it all over the room, and bring more toiletries than I need.

The last one of those is due to me never being sure if the hotel I’m staying at will have individually sized or bulk dispensers of soap and shampoo. Therefore, I’m more likely to bring my own items from home, including bringing my own small soaps with me from my vast collection.

This brings me to my most recent travel pet peeve.

Housekeeping, I love you, but we need to talk. Please stop playing musical chairs with my toiletries!

I like to keep things organized. It keeps me happy. I’m not over the top about it, but small things, like stacking my change by coin type, give me some sense of order. It’s one of my strange travel quirks.

How I Organize My Toiletries

In the bathroom, I also keep things organized by category:

  • Toothbrush, toothpaste, and mouthwash? Together.
  • Razor and shaving cream? Side by side.
  • Brush and deodorant? Last-minute essentials, ready to go.
  • Miscellaneous items? Off to the side, minding their business.

That’s how I left the room yesterday. Here’s what I looked like when I returned:

The Mystery of My Reorganized Items

Was there a secret feng shui principle at play? Did my toothbrush offend the soap?

I can get the nail clippers next to the razor as grooming products, but why put the toothbrush cover in a prominent space? I had nothing on the shelf, so why move the shave cream, brush and deodorant there?

The final thing is that when I left the room, all the items were on the right side of the sink. Moving them to the left side doesn’t bother me, but if you’re moving them, could you mirror where they were on the other side?

I’m spending too much time figuring out the thought process behind this action. Most likely, no thought was given to the placement of the items; they just wanted to present them neatly. If so, who does that?

If I’m staying more than one night I only need trash emptied and fresh towels. Don’t need much housekeeping.

Hotels make a lot of noise about being ECO friendly. They put motion detectors so the heat/AC doesn’t run when the room is unoccupied. So why do the housekeepers set the room at 60 deg F in hot climates (e.g. Las Vegas)? I’ve been in situations where I’ve had to turn the heat on in the summertime to get the room to a comfortable temp when I return to my room.
