Airline prices seem to be all over the place. The price you saw on Delta last week might be twice as high now and Spirit is still a quarter of the price but do you really want to worry about having the flights that this guy did?
How airlines decide on their prices is a mixture of, among other things, timing, the popularity of a location, day of the week, competition, leisure vs. business travel, one way vs. round trip, and, of course, what the market will bear. If you ask them how they take all that and more into consideration in order to determine if your flight will cost $200 or $2000, they’ll tell you that it’s an algorithm-based science that’s proprietary for each airline. But the basics of each are still the same, regardless. And it’s pretty fascinating.
Yes, But How Can You Find The Cheapest Airfare?
Just because you understand why, when and how the airlines decide on the prices they do doesn’t mean you don’t want to pay the lowest prices possible. These pointers may help:
- These are some ways to look for the cheapest round trip airfare
- These are some more hints of how to find cheap airfare (Himpmunk is mentioned in the post. Please note that Hipmunk will be closing its doors on January 23, 2020)
- This post tells about how to find the airlines’ promo codes for airline discounts
- This one specifically explains how Skiplagged can help you in your quest for lower airfare (and why we don’t use it)
- How to save on flights by driving to a different airport
Happy flying, travel friends!
