Farewell To The Last Parts Of Our NYC Trip

by joeheg

If you’ve been following along, we had a trip to NYC and New Orleans planned for the end of April. We’ve long since given up on that trip, but it took a while for the airlines to allow me to cancel our flights without having to pay any fees.

I’ve written about canceling flights with Southwest and JetBlue, which were quick and easy.  I was a bit worried about canceling our Delta flight.

This was because I had already changed this flight once. The original flight, our one going home, was from New Orleans to Orlando and I changed it to New York to Orlando. This was back when Delta was only allowing you to change flights, not cancel them, and it was a one-time-only offer.

Much has changed since then, so I decided to see if I’d be able to cancel the flight on the Delta website.

I logged into my SkyMiles account and selected the flight. Like almost every flight nowadays, this one had a schedule change since the last time I looked. I saw this notice when I looked at my reservation.

I did what it said and clicked on the “Modify Flight” button.

I was given an option to change the flight or cancel it. I chose to cancel.

From there, I was shown a screen with the cancellation information. I would receive the miles and a refund of the taxes I paid. No mention of credit like from Southwest and JetBlue. Kudos to Delta for that.

That was it. Done.

I did have to cancel our hotel reservation but since I hardly ever book a non-refundable hotel rate, it was no issue to let Hilton know we weren’t coming.

There was one more part of the trip that we needed to cancel. That was taken care of today when Broadway and Off-Broadway shows are closed until June.

Telecharge wrote today to inform us we’d be getting a refund for our tickets.

Final Thoughts

While we knew the trip was not going to happen, the waiting to be able to cancel the plans made the eventuality somewhat bittersweet. When I deleted the entire journey from my TripIt account, I thought about what it is like in New York City right now. Hoping that the rest of the country doesn’t have to go through what they’re living through. Wondering when we’ll be able to revisit one of our happy places and what will it be like when we return.
