When the world slowly starts to re-open at appropriate times, social distancing is still going to be in the front of most peoples’ minds, at least until a vaccine is found. So I suspect that when we travel, there are undoubtedly going to be lots of changes from what we were previously used to:
- The potential for health tests before boarding a plane, train or ship
- The way we board planes
- Theme parks might initially be missing a few key elements
- Cash could go extinct
Obviously, some lawmakers in the U.S. are willing to open public beaches, even while the number of those diagnosed with or who have died from the virus continues to rise. But hopefully, other places will be more responsible and will look at effective ways of keeping people safe, even at the beach.
I’m just not sure the following is one of them…
Nuova Neon Group 2, company out of Modena, Italy, has invented a potential solution to ensure safe beach spacing.

They’ve designed pre-measured “boxes” made of plexiglass, which would measure out 4.5 meters (nearly 15′) square, complete with a 5′ opening to allow access in and out of the space.
Each box would be large enough to hold two lounge chairs and an umbrella.
The CEO of Nuova Neon Group 2 told La Republicca: “…we tried to imagine the return to the beach. The idea was born with the dual purpose of protecting but also of restarting the activities.”
Well, I guess it’s a start? But when we showed the plans to the people in our Facebook group, they brought up some very good points about safety:
- It’s like when they used to have No Smoking sections in restaurants. The top and doorways are wide open and the aerosol virus will still waft over to the other peoples’ “zones”
- Being surrounded by plexiglass will be like being in an oven in the summertime, between the sun baking through and getting no breeze. “You may as well put your head in a plastic bag.”
- Who is going to clean each section after a family leaves?
But also practicality and usefulness:
- Only the people in the front are going to have an unobstructed view of the ocean
- What if you want to go into the ocean? No protection there
- Will the boxes get moved closer/further to account for when the tide changes?
- What if a storm is scheduled to come through?
So yeah, lots to think about. What do you think of this solution?
