After coronavirus began in early December, the first case reported outside of China was in Thailand. So after China’s domestic flights began to recover in March, it makes sense that the next country to follow is also in Southeast Asia. But it won’t be Thailand.
It will be Vietnam.
Express International reports that all provinces and cities have been allowed to increase domestic flights, effective April 23rd.
There will be 20 daily flights between Hanoi and Ho Chi Mihn City. Vietnam Airlines and VietJet will operate 6 flights each, while Jetstar Pacific and Bamboo Airways will each have 4 flights.
There will also be 5 round trip flights a day from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to Da Nang, and Vietnam Airlines will cover the Ho Chi Minh City – Con Dao route each day.
Each domestic airline will be allowed to make one round trip flight from Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City to other cities, once per day, as well as one round trip per day that doesn’t originate from Hanoi or Ho Chi Mihn City.
Railways, buses and shipping firms have also been allowed to increase their routes, as per Vietnam’s Ministry of Transport.
As a main player in the SARS outbreak in 2003, Vietnam is said to be one of the most effective responses to the coronavirus, and, in this country of 95 million, has reported less than 300 cases and zero deaths (this link from The Nation explains more). Their cases of coronavirus have generally shown a downward trend in the past few weeks, including recently going 8 days in a row without any new cases.
It’s strongly advised that passengers of Vietnam’s transportation systems continue to wash their hands regularly, wear face masks, and limit communication during their respective trips. They must also declare their health and have their temperature taken prior to boarding.
Carriers must ensure that passengers sit at least 1 meter apart, and they can’t fill more than 50% of however many seats they have.
