Due to concerns of COVID-19, the border between the United States and Canada will remain closed to nonessential travel for another 30 days, as per CTV News.
The announcement was made by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, who said it was by mutual agreement.
Trudeau suggested that it could still be months before non-essential travel is permitted, and even once the border does open, stronger measures such as quarantine, medical checks and tracking those entering Canada might be put in place.
“We know that we need to do more to ensure that travelers who are coming back from overseas or the U.S. as Canadian are being properly followed up on, are properly isolated and don’t become further vectors for the spread of Covid-19,” Trudeau said.
Travel restrictions between the two countries had initially begun on March 21 and included all travel except trade, commerce and health care workers who lived on one side of the border and worked on the other. The original order was set to last 30 days and was extended another 30 days in late April.
Of this most recent extension, the Prime Minister said, “It was the right thing to further extend by 30 days our closure of the Canada-U.S. border to travelers other than essential services and goods, but we will continue to watch carefully what’s happening elsewhere in the world and around us as we make decisions on next steps.”
A spokesperson from the Department of Homeland Security told CNN, “The United States has great appreciation for the efforts of our partners in Canada and Mexico to ensure that North America is working together to combat the pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus.”
